Responsible reporting ahead of the 2027 elections and the media’s role in fighting corruption were the themes as the Enugu State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists closed its 2026 Press Week.
The grand finale was scheduled for the Lawrence Ugwuanyi Press Centre, Enugu, chaired by Chief Anthony Ani, SAN, a former Attorney-General of the state.
Who was billed to speak
- Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on “The Role of the Media and Other Critical Stakeholders in Sustaining the Fight Against Corruption”.
- David Umahi, Minister of Works, on “Strengthening Democracy Through Responsible Journalism: 2027 Polls in Focus”.
- Governor Peter Mbah was also expected to attend.
The organising committee said in a statement that “the topics were carefully selected to address critical issues affecting the country.”
A week of events
Press Week opened on Sunday, October 18, with a thanksgiving service at the Christian Victory Prayer Ministry in Enugu. It also included a football match and an outreach to vulnerable children. The chapel planned to honour several public figures, including Enugu State Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa and Rangers International general manager Amobi Ezeaku.
Why it matters
With campaigns for 2027 already under way across the state, the pressure on local journalists will grow. Fair coverage, checked facts and space for every side are what voters need to make informed choices. That standard applies to us too. You can read how we work in our editorial standards.
