Opi traders back the Enugu–Nsukka road project, but ask why work started at their shops

Traders at Opi say they support the dualisation of the Enugu–Nsukka road. What they want is a fairer order of work and time to relocate.

The dualisation of the Enugu–Ugwuogo–Opi–Nsukka road is one of the biggest projects in Enugu North. Described as more than 60km long, it was announced by Governor Peter Mbah to ease traffic and reduce crime along the route.

For traders at the commercial settlement in Opi, the start of work earlier this year came at a cost. When the contractor moved in with heavy equipment in February, shops along the road were demolished.

Losses on the roadside

One provisions dealer told The Whistler he lost more than N5 million. He had rented his shop late the previous year and had just restocked. He said he had been warned that work was coming, but expected it to begin on sections where no one was trading. Instead, he said, “they started from the traders’ shops.”

Levi Ozioko, who sells drinks and moved to Opi from Kaduna some years ago, carried his goods home. He made clear he is not against the project. “The road dualisation is very good,” he said. His request was simple: start where there is no human activity, and allow gradual relocation.

What traders are asking for

  • Work to begin on undeveloped stretches before busy trading areas.
  • Enough notice and time to move goods and find new space.
  • Clear information on where displaced traders can set up.

What is still unknown

The reports so far include no published cost, completion date or official response from the state government or contractor about the traders’ losses. Those are the details residents need to plan their lives and businesses.

OjolojoMedia has asked how traders affected by road projects in the zone are being supported. If you trade along the Enugu–Nsukka road, tell us what has happened to your business.
